Obesity levels in Hawke's Bay children have tripled, a survey shows. Thus the Community Foundation (HB) has been working with  the Sport and Recreation Council of New Zealand and the Heart Foundation to enable two Sport Hawke’s Bay staff to improve the physical activity and nutrition for under fives in the region.  It’s a $55,000 programme.

The project covers a co-ordinator who arranges transport for outpatients and the elderly and infirm. It pays a mileage allowance  to drivers selected to provide  transport for the patients to attend specialists and clinics at Hawke’s Bay Hospital. On average there are four such trips a week from Central Hawke’s Bay.

Assistance for breastfeeding mothers
The Community Foundation HB (previously Transfusion) worked with the Tindall Foundation to provide three years’ funding to Hastings Parent Centre. This enabled a  part-time co-ordinator to help young mothers with breastfeeding of new-born babies.
